How to start AI character chat in Fastmate, what conversation memory can and cannot do, and when to use the app for voice.
Fastmate offers AI character chat for adults aged 18 and over. You can pick a character on the web, create your own Mate, or meet a character through a story episode in the app. A Mate is an AI character you can keep talking to.
Start with something concrete
A character's introduction gives you a place to begin. Respond to the situation, ask a question, or say what you would do next. You do not need special instructions to start a conversation.
For example, if a fictional character has just finished a long shift, ask how it went or suggest somewhere to unwind. This gives the conversation more to work with than a greeting alone.
What memory can and cannot do
Fastmate supports continuity across conversations with a Mate. Earlier conversations and shared moments can inform later replies, so each chat does not have to start from a blank introduction.
Memory is not a promise of perfect recall. A Mate can miss a detail, misunderstand it, or respond inconsistently. If something matters to the scene, mention it again; if the character gets it wrong, correct it in the conversation. Do not use character chat as a reliable record of important information.
A story can give you a shared beginning
Full story episodes are available in the iOS and Android app. An episode puts you inside a fictional situation, where you respond in your own words and play toward an ending. Supported characters can then continue as Mates.
You do not have to finish an episode to try character chat. The web also lets you choose a character or create your own. See getting started with Fastmate for the web and app differences.
Text and voice
Text gives you time to think about a reply. Real-time voice calls in the app offer a spoken conversation with a Mate. Choose whichever suits the scene and your surroundings.
An AI character is fictional. Enjoy the ongoing story without treating its responses as facts or professional advice.

Where do the characters come from?
